Title
Current challenges in structural morphology
Abstract
In 2010, Andrew Borgart identified the main challenges for the decade to come for the Structural Morphology Group of the International Association of Shell and Spatial Structures. He summed up these challenges in the form of three questions, left open for researchers and practitioners:
1) Do we need computational design tools, black boxes, or a greater understanding?
2) Do form‐finding and optimization result in a required result and constructable design?
3) Do complex geometry structures need new structural typologies?
Since then, the field of architectural geometry has been profoundly transformed by key theoretical contributions in mathematics and computer sciences. The landscape of manufacturing for the construction industry is also rapidly evolving with digital fabrication and 3D printing. However, the profusion of design tools is not synonym of success in planning of complex structures, and the three questions remain fully relevant.
The aim of this talk is to reflect back on the challenges for structural engineers and architects. The specific case of gridshell structures and glazed envelopes is studied in depth. Regarding design tools, we show interesting relationships between descriptive geometry, a drawing technique developed in the 1700's, and conjugate curve networks on surfaces. Regarding optimization, we propose a novel point of view on optimization for load‐bearing capacity, and CAD‐based optimization for gridshell structures. The lecture will be concluded by the presentation of pavilions built to demonstrate the feasibility of the optimization workflow in a practical context.

Title
Closing conditions for smooth and discrete curves and surfaces
Abstract
For geometric objects, whose compatibility equations form an integrable system,
one can find solutions by introducing a spectral parameter and solving a linear system.
I will use the examples of polarised curves and constant mean curvature surfaces to explain
how the associated family of flat connections can be used to construct new,
closed polarised curves and new closed constant mean curvature surfaces.
When discretising the associated family, we obtain corresponding results in the discrete case.

Explicit formula for discrete Kirchhoff elastic rods
Abstract
The Kirchhoff elastic rod is a mathematical model of thin elastic rods, and its shape is known to be described by Jacobi's elliptic functions.
In this talk, we show that the discrete Kirchhoff elastic rod defined by Bobenko and Suris in 1999 can be explicitly constructed by elliptic theta functions.
This is a joint work with Satoshi Kawakubo (University of Hyogo).

We connect smooth isoperimetric flows of discrete planar curves with
(discrete) Darboux transformations of smooth planar curves,
by switching the roles of the discrete and smooth parameters involved.
In doing so, we define Darboux flows that include isoperimetric flows,
and also give an alternate geometric interpretation for establishing the discrete potential mKdV equation.

Interaction between discrete and smooth versions of Graphic Statics
Abstract
Recent years have observed a revival of Graphic Statics in structural mechanics.
While its discrete version that can be used for trusses and grid shells is mainly discussed,
its smooth version does exist at the same time.
This lecture will go through the relation of discrete and smooth versions of Graphic Statics.

Variational proof of the existence of six types of periodic orbits in the planar circular three-body problem
Abstract
Though the n-body problem is non-integrable except for n=2,
Chenciner and Montgomery showed the existence of the periodic orbit
named figure-eight in the three-body problem with a variational approach in 2000.
Their work has led to many results in this field.
In this talk, we introduce famous results in the n-body problem
and show the existence of six types of periodic orbits in the planar circular restricted three-body problem.
Moreover, we spend the rest of time discussing open problems.

High order curvature flows of plane curves with generalised Neumann boundary conditions
Abstract
We consider the parabolic polyharmonic diffusion and $L^2$-gradient flows of the $m$-th arclength
derivative of curvature for regular closed curves evolving with generalised
Neumann boundary conditions. In the polyharmonic case, we prove that if the curvature of
the initial curve is small in $L^2$, then the evolving curve converges exponentially in the $C^\infty$
topology to a straight horizontal line segment. The same behaviour is shown for the $L^2$-gradient
flows provided the energy of the initial curve is sufficiently small. In each case the
smallness conditions depend only on $m$. This is joint work with Glen Wheeler and Yuhan Wu.

Explicit formula for planar discrete elasticae
Abstract
It is well known that an elastic curve is defined as a critical point of elastic energy and its curvature is given by elliptic functions.
Furthermore, the position vector of an elastic curve can also be written in terms of elliptic functions, as Mumford (1994) demonstrated,
for example. This is called the explicit formula for elastic curves.
On the other hand, Bobenko and Suris (1999) proposed an integrable discrete model of elastic curves.
In this talk, I will derive an explicit formula for discrete elastic curves in the Euclidean plane.
